The Power of a Hug

This week I have been entrusted to care for our fifteen year old grandson while his parents attend a college welcome program for our eldest grandson in Boston. He’ll be going away in August.

It is a bittersweet moment in time. I am enjoying having “the baby” alone. But it brings back memories of how much juggling we did when the two boys were little. I always worried the youngest wasn’t getting his fair share of attention because the eldest has such a huge personality he could suck the spotlight out of a room.

So I took the opportunity to ask the young one, how he felt about my concern. He gave me a big hug and said, he never noticed a problem at all. His reassurance made me so relieved.

Tonight I baked him his favorite homemade chocolate cake. I made only vanilla frosting because that’s his favorite. Usually I make half vanilla and half chocolate because his brother likes chocolate. But this cake, this weekend and this moment is all about him! I trust he’ll be thrilled.

  1. Awww, Mugsy! You are such the best. It's so amazing how we assume we have been deficient in some way, only to find that whatever we imagined, grace has made up the difference. Not always, but often. I'm glad for you. Wish I could share a piece of that cake! cw
